Pablo Antonio Milan (1961-2017) was a sixth-generation New Mexican, born in Milan, New Mexico, a town founded by his grandfather. Largely self-taught, he began painting at twelve and was accepted into his first gallery at seventeen.

He worked as an expressionistic colourist, layering washes of fast-drying acrylic, sometimes twenty-five deep, and cutting into them with palette knife, heavy brushwork and splatter. The result is a Southwest seen through heat and memory rather than description.

He was named Spanish Artist of the Year in 1990, kept his own gallery in Santa Fe, and showed from Florida to California. He died in 2017 at fifty-five, the youngest of the group of painters who drove the contemporary Southwest movement.
